Common Medication for Migraines

Anyone who suffers from migraines knows the pain can be difficult to treat. To give proper treatment, the doctor must do a physical examination, ask about the frequency and severity of the migraines and find out the patient's complete medical history. Once aware of the migraine sufferer's history, the doctor can prescribe a treatment. Here are some examples of common medication for migraines.

Analgesics

Analgesics are a type of pain medication prescribed to stop migraine pain that has already started. Common over-the-counter analgesics are acetaminophen and aspirin; these often have caffeine added to assist in pain relief. Fioricet and Fiorinal are common analgesics that require a prescription.

NSAIDs

NSAIDs are non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The most common NSAIDs are Aleve and Advil. NSAIDs are usually found over the counter, unless they contain narcotics such as hydrocodone.

Triptans and ergotamines

Triptans and ergotamines are targeted abortives that are better at handling specific types of pain than NSAIDs and analgesics. Examples of ergotamines are Cafergot and Migranal. Triptans come as nasal sprays, injections and tablet form. Examples of triptans are Imitrex, Frova, Zomid, Axert and Amerge.

Preventative medications

Preventative medications are given to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. If migraines frequently occur and disrupt daily activities, preventative medications can greatly improve quality of life. Calcium-channel blockers such as Procardia and Cardizem, beta-blockers such As Indera and Blocadren, certain antidepressants and anticonvulsants such as Depakote are examples of preventative medications. Occasionally NSAIDs are also given as preventative medications.

The best way to treat migraines is to keep a food and migraine diary. The diary should list everything you eat and the time of day it is eaten. The time of occurrence, length and severity of all headaches should also be recorded in the diary. Reviewing this diary with your doctor helps to determine what is triggering the migraines.
